Who Unlocked the Door?

By Chantal Klingbeil

The Australasian Missionary College in Australia was founded in 1897. Two years later, just as the college was in the middle of a very important building project, bad news came from the United States. Church members there had been helping the college by sending special offerings. But just as they were in the middle of their building, the help from America was cut off because of money problems. Those in charge at the college had a big problem – how were they going to pay the workers and buy the rest of the bricks and other supplies needed?

And then to make things worse, the leaders had a visit by someone who had lent the college some money. But if the school thought they would get help from this person again, they were in for a nasty surprise. The person wanted the loan back, and by the very next day, too. With no cash on hand, several of the leaders dashed off to try to get some money from the bank to pay the debt. It was already 4:00 p.m., and the bank was closed. The men were desperate. As they passed the side door of the bank, they noticed something strange. The side door was open about the width of a man. The three men walked in. Inside the bank they found the banker and his assistant with all the money from the vault out in piles on the table. The banker and his assistant were very busy counting the money. Both men turned pale in shock when they realized they were not alone; after all, you can’t have people just walking into the bank while the money was all being counted! Once the banker and his assistant realized they were not being robbed, they wanted to know how the three leaders had gotten in.

“We walked in through the side door,” they replied.

“Yes I know,” replied the banker, “but how did you get the door open? I shut, bolted, locked, and chained that door myself. How did you get it open?” The leaders explained that they had found the door open. For a few seconds everything was quiet as the leaders, the banker, and the assistant all realized that an angel must have gone before the leaders and opened that bolted, locked, and chained door. Can you guess who saw to it that the college got the money they needed?
