Can you believe it’s already that time of the year again? Thanksgiving is behind us and now everyone is looking forward to the end of the year—Christmas! Long before Thanksgiving even arrived, Christmas songs were playing, plans were being made to visit family, people were doing their shopping and looking forward to school breaks, plus all the other festivities that come with the holiday season.
I received a call the other day from my mother, telling me that my parents are planning to visit my family for Christmas. Part of me wanted to keep it a surprise for my children, but knowing how excited they would be looking forward to seeing Grandma and Grandpa, I told them.
Excitement was in the house! All of a sudden, there was a buzz in the air about all the things that they want to do when Grandma and Grandpa come to visit.
As I listened to their conversations, it made me wonder how it would be if everyone were that eager and involved in getting ready for the second coming of Jesus.
Long ago, shortly after the creation of the world, Heaven was making plans for a very special visit to Earth. You see, mankind had sinned and was separated from God. Yet God so loved us that He gave the most important gift of all time—His Son—for our redemption and salvation.
But God didn’t keep it a secret! He told prophets, and the prophets wrote about it in the Old Testament, and they told the people. How sad that there were only a few people who had listened and were prepared to welcome Jesus in Bethlehem at His birth.
Heaven is making plans for another very special visit. This time, Jesus will be coming to gather all His faithful children to be with Him throughout eternity. Approximately 2,000 years have passed since His first coming, and people from all ages have had sufficient opportunity to get prepared.
What are you doing to be ready for Jesus’ return? What are you doing to let others know—and be prepared for—the great, final event of this Earth’s history? As you come to the end of the year, when the whole world recognizes the birth of Jesus, think of how you can tell others about this spectacular final event soon to come.
Here are just a couple of ideas: Get some friends together and go caroling, then when you have finished singing songs about Jesus’ birth, hand out some tracts about His return. Or ask Mom or Dad to help you bake a small loaf of bread or some cookies for your neighbors, and with that package of goodies, include some literature about the soon coming of Jesus.
When you think of more ideas, please e-mail me at msmelissa(at)iiw.org and let me know what you have decided to do!
Have a wonderful time with friends and family as you remember Jesus—the most wonderful Gift of all time—and prepare your heart to be ready to spend eternity with our gracious Lord and Savior.
“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ.” (Titus 2:13)
