Have you ever gotten lost and didn’t know which direction to go? Did you need someone to guide you?
My husband was driving toward an airport and needed to return a rental car. He had a slight problem though: he couldn’t remember where the rental car company was located! He had a general idea, but knew that without some kind of navigation system, like a GPS, he would never be able to figure out where to go. He didn’t have a lot of time, and he needed help to make it to his destination.
That’s when he called and asked me for help. He said, “Would you please find an online map and direct me to the rental car place?”
I found the address for the car drop-off, and he told me where he was, then I started giving him directions over the phone.
“When you get to—and I named a certain road—go south.” Now, my husband knew that the airport was north of the road he was on, so it didn’t make any sense to him to hear me say he needed to go south! South was in the opposite direction of the airport!
“No, no,” he said, “that’s the wrong direction. The airport is north.” I assured him that I was guiding him in the right direction and continued to tell him to take the south road. I knew he was coming up to the turnoff, and it was important that he make the right turn!
“But south is the wrong direction,” he told me. “I’ll be heading away from the airport!”
That was when I said, “No, just trust me and you’ll be okay. I can see the big picture.”
I was looking at a map, so I could see what my husband couldn’t see. I knew that if he drove south like I told him to, he would soon exit that road and go north—in exactly the right direction, and straight toward the rental car company he needed to find.
You know, as humans, we have very limited knowledge. We often don’t—and can’t—see the big picture. But there is Someone who can. And He says to us in Psalm 32:8:
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.”
Even if you can’t see what’s around the next corner, you can know that God can, and that you can trust Him!
While we’re worrying about the small details, God knows what’s coming, and He already knows how He’s going to get us through it. Whatever you’re facing today, be content to follow God’s leading. You might not always understand it, but God can see the big picture!
