Green Smoothies

By Jean Boonstra

Have you ever had a green smoothie?

They look really terrible. Not only are they green, but they’re thick and kind of look like they should smell bad. On the outside, they look like something nobody would ever choose to drink!

If you’ve ever tried one, you know the truth: they aren’t terrible at all! Green smoothies smell yummy and taste delicious. Do you want to know why? They are mostly made up of delicious fresh fruit juices, like apple and grape.

glasses of green smoothiesTo make it healthier, broccoli and other green veggies like kale or spinach also go in. Those are the ones that you can see and that make it look green. But in spite of how it looks, green smoothies are delicious! Appearances aren’t everything.

The Bible tells us a lot about the outward appearance of things. Like in this verse (1 Samuel 16:7):

“…the Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

People are a little like green smoothies sometimes. Have you ever met someone who was kind of different from you? Maybe they were wearing what seemed—to you—to be funny-looking clothes, or had sort of a weird haircut. Maybe when you first met them, you weren’t sure about them. They looked different from you or your friends.

Maybe when you first met them, you felt the same way you did when you first looked at a green smoothie: “That’s different! It can’t be good!” I love green smoothies and juices, and the reason is because I didn’t judge it by the way it looked. I took a sip and found out that it was sweet and delicious.

You can do the same with the people you meet. So the new kid in your class dresses a little strangely. Take a chance and say hello. You might find out that he (or she) is a great person. He may become your new best friend, just waiting to be discovered. Hey, maybe even that shirt you turn your nose up at now is the newest thing in fashion, and you just don’t know it yet!

The next time you meet someone new, remember green smoothies and don’t judge them by how they look. And if you haven’t tried a green juice or smoothie yet, go ahead and see how sweet it can be. Today, take a chance on someone new and make it a wonderful day—a new day with Jesus!
