A Warning Unheeded

By Melissa Bradshaw

Everything was still and quiet. It was very early in the morning and most people were still asleep. Privates Lockard and Elliot were on duty at the Opana Radar Station when suddenly they noticed on their radar screens something that looked like a lot of planes flying toward them. They reported what they saw to their commanding officer, who reasoned that it must be the American planes they were expecting from California. Privates Lockard and Elliot were told not to worry.

Less than an hour after planes were spotted on the radar screens, an attack on America began. It came as a complete surprise. According to those in command, there was no reason to expect any kind of attack. Planes were parked wingtip to wingtip, everything was locked up in line with peacetime regulations and officers and crewmen were not on high alert. The attack was over in about one hour and 45 minutes and left Pearl Harbor devastated. America mourned the loss of more than 2,000 men and women.

Just a little over 2,000 years ago, there were men in the east who noticed something out of the ordinary in the sky. Hoping to get a better understanding of what they were seeing, they studied the Hebrew Scriptures and learned that the Messiah’s coming was near. They found where Scripture said, “There shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Scepter shall rise out of Israel.” (Numbers 24:17) The long-awaited Messiah was going to be born!

With excitement, they started out on a journey that would change their lives and change the world. According to the custom of their country, they brought the richest gifts their land could afford to give to the One through Whom all the earth would be blessed.

The Star led them all they way to Jerusalem, where they expected everyone to be talking about this newborn King. They were surprised that no one seemed to know anything about Him. Soon, news reached King Herod about their search. He wasn’t happy to learn of another king who he feared might take his place. Herod asked the priests to help him understand the matter, and he was told a Ruler would out of Bethlehem to the people of Israel. (Micah 5:2)

The wise men followed the star all the way to Bethlehem, where they worshipped baby Jesus. They saw a sign in the sky, and having searched the Scriptures with open hearts, they met the Messiah with gladness and joy.

Boys and girls, Jesus is coming again soon, and the Bible gives us signs so we can know when His return is near. To lots of people, just like those at Pearl Harbor, the Second Coming of Jesus will come as a complete surprise because they have ignored the signs. Many people are so wrapped up in life around them that they take no time to study and pray.

It is my prayer that you and I will not be among those who will be caught by surprise. By reading the Bible every day, we can know Jesus personally, and also recognize the signs that show His coming is near. Let’s purpose in our hearts today to be ready when He comes to take us to Heaven to live with Him forever.
